Difference between s and p block elements | Chemistry of s and p block elements | Periodic table s and p block elements

The s-block elements and p-block elements.  are two different groups of elements in the periodic table, distinguished by their electron configurations.

1. s-block Elements:- Groups: 1 (Alkali metals) and 2 (Alkaline earth metals).- Electron Configuration:Their outermost electrons are in the **s orbital** (ns^1 for Group 1 and ns^2 for Group 2).- Properties:  - Generally highly reactive, especially alkali metals.

  - Good conductors of heat and electricity.

  - Low ionization energies.

  - They form basic oxides and hydroxides.

- Examples: Hydrogen (H), Lithium (Li), Sodium (Na), Magnesium (Mg), Calcium (Ca).

2. p-block Elements:

- Groups: 13 to 18.- Electron Configuration:Their outermost electrons are in the p orbital(np^1 to np^6).- Properties:

  - Show a wide range of properties (metals, non-metals, and metalloids).

  - Reactivity varies greatly; for example, halogens (Group 17) are highly reactive, while noble gases (Group 18) are mostly inert.

  - They form acidic oxides.-Examples:Carbon (C), Nitrogen (N), Oxygen (O), Fluorine (F), and Argon (Ar).

Chemistry of s- and p-block Elements:- s-block chemistry is characterized by the formation of ionic compounds, strong reducing behavior, and basic solutions.- p-block chemistry includes a wide range of oxidation states, covalent bonding, and acidic or neutral compounds.
